The Netherlands is known as a country of mills, bulb fields, dykes and canals, but also for the modern cosmopolitan cities with multicultural communities. The name Netherlands stands for below lying earth and unsurprisingly, 26% of the country’s surface area is located below sea level, with the lowest point being almost 7 meters below sea level. The country stays above water through a complex system of dikes and through sand dunes along the coast. The unofficial name of the Netherlands is Holland.
With 17 million people and a population density of nearly 500 people per km2, the Netherlands is the most densely populated country of the European Union.
The Netherlands is known as a tolerant and internationally oriented country. Almost all Dutch people speak English, many also speak German and/or French.
The country is compact and easy to navigate: it is 400 kilometers from north to south and 200 kilometers from east to west. Due to the short distances, almost every place within the Netherlands can be reached easily. Public transport and the road network are of high quality. And do like the Dutch: travel by bike!
